Language campers needed August 3 - 9, 2008

Dear colleagues,
Due to the less-than-robust economy, for the first time ever, signups for Language Camp, located north of Pittsburgh, PA, are way down, and the director is trying to find campers for August 3 - 9. The camp, held at beautiful Camp Kon-o-kwee, serves students finishing grades 2 - 8 in French, Spanish and German. No previous study of any foreign language is necessary.

My own children have been campers/CITs there for many years, I was a counselor during one of those years, and my whole family can't say enough about the fantastic experience it is for the kids to participate in camp activities and nightly celebrations completely in the language, plus both small and large group instruction by certified teachers. The campers have a ball and don't want to leave at the end of the week!

Tuition for the camp, including room and board, costs around $435 dollars, but director and National Board certified German teacher Helena Schaefers is willing to provide partial scholarships.

If you know of students who could like to attend, I'm asking a large favor. Please contact Helena for more information, then call your school's administrative assistants for student emails or phone numbers. The website www.languagecamp.org<http://www.languagecamp.org/> is now down, but should be reactivated soon. Please call Helena at (412) 366-7925.

Thank you, dear friends, for considering!
Linda Twedt
Poitiers75@msn.com

New online course at the UW-Madison: Methods of Teaching Less

Methods of Teaching Less Commonly Taught Languages
An online methods course for postsecondary LCTL instructors
Fall 2008, 2 credits
University of Wisconsin-Madison

Course description
Methods of Teaching Less Commonly Taught Languages is a fully online
course developed in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Language
Institute, in collaboration with the National Council of Less Commonly
Taught Languages (NCOLCTL), to provide pre- and in-service instructors
of less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) at the postsecondary level
with an introduction to language teaching methods. The course will be
offered as a pilot in the Fall 2008. Enrollment is limited.

The course is built around the National Standards for Foreign Language
Education, with a framework that responds directly to the particular
challenges shared by many instructors working in LCTLs in the United
States. The course is based on original material authored by the
project team, videotaped interviews with LCTL professionals and
students, videotaped exemplars of classroom practices, and readings from
professional journals and other works. In this course, you will reflect
on your and other's teaching practices, learn about approaches to
language teaching and research in language learning, and apply new ideas
and methods to your teaching.

*Fall 2008 instructor*
Professor Sally Sieloff Magnan, (60 262-9741, ssmagnan@wisc.edu

Questions about enrollment
Dianna Murphy, (60 262-1575, diannamurphy@wisc.edu

*Course authors*
Sally Magnan, Dianna Murphy, Robin Worth, Erlin Barnard

*Project*
National Online Less Commonly Taught Languages Teacher Training
Initiative, a collaborative project of the National Council of Less
Commonly Taught Languages and the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Language Institute.
Los viajes de Rosa y Ernesto (Rosa and Ernesto’s Journeys)
A step by step Spanish Reader, Audio Book and Grammar Guide, by R. Sturam

I am succesfully using this "teaching novel" in my Spanish classes but I believe it is useful for heritage students as well.

This "teaching novel" is the story of two young travelers in Latin America who are searching for their respective families. One, an adopted American boy, goes from North to South, looking for his biological family; the other, an Ecuadorian girl from the Amazon basin’s western fringe, journeys South to North looking for her mother, who emigrated to the United States.
Readers progress step by step, gradually augmenting their vocabulary and becoming familiar with grammar almost by absorption. As the plot thickens and the language flows, knowledge of nations, indigenous groups and some of today’s social and environmental questions also grow.

Grammar and Vocabulary Exercises accompanying each chapter can be downloaded for free from:
www.allbilingual.com/material.htm
